SEAFDEC Pays a Courtesy Call to SEAFDEC Council Director for Cambodia, Observes Dai Fishery in Tonle Sap

The Secretary-General of SEAFDEC, Ms. Malinee Smithrithee, together with the Policy and Program Coordinator of the SEAFDEC Secretariat, Dr. Worawit Wanchana, and the Head of Program Planning and Management Division of the SEAFDEC Training Department (TD), Mr. Isara Chanrachkij, paid a courtesy call to the SEAFDEC Council Director for Cambodia and Deputy-Director General of Fisheries Administration (FiA) of Cambodia, Mr. Ing Try, Deputy-Director General of FiA of Cambodia, Mr. Buoy Roitana, and SEAFDEC National Coordinator for Cambodia, Dr. Em Puthy, on 30 January 2023 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The officials discussed the priority areas of technical support that SEAFDEC could extend to Cambodia including capacity-building activities on catch assessment, electronic ASEAN Catch Documentation Scheme (eACDS), and Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) as well as regional collaboration and information sharing to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Moreover, SEAFDEC delegates also observed the operation of the stationary trawl (dai) fishery which was established over 140 years ago in Tonle Sap. The dai fishery is important in the fishery production of Cambodia, landing approximately 14 % of the annual catch from the Tonle Sap Great Lake system.
