The SEAFDEC Secretariat hosted a Special Seminar “Bringing New Insights for Better Fisheries in the Region” on 8 December 2025 at the SEAFDEC Secretariat in Bangkok, Thailand. The full-day event was attended by relevant staff from the SEAFDEC Secretariat and SEAFDEC Training Department, Faculty of Fisheries of Kasetsart University, and Department Fisheries of Thailand.
The Special Seminar served as a platform to showcase the key outputs of the Regional Fisheries Policy Network (RFPN) Members after performing desk studies on relevant issues in their respective countries during their one-year assignment at the SEAFDEC Secretariat in 2025. It is envisioned that the information shared by the RFPN Members would serve as guide for future regional cooperation and policy development for sustainable fisheries in the Southeast Asian region. Covering a range of topics, the presentations of the RFPN Members for Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam were entitled as follows:
- Strengthening Legal and Policy Frameworks Toward Effective Management of Inland and Marine Fisheries in Cambodia
- Empowering Coastal Communities in Fisheries Surveillance: lessons from implementing formal and customary laws in Indonesia
- Strengthening Sustainable Development and Management of Inland Capture Fisheries and Aquaculture toward Food Security in Lao PDR
- Integrating Multilayered Identification and Technology in Fisheries Governance: lessons from vessel marking system in Malaysia
- Gauging the Climate Change Adaptation in the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector of Myanmar
- Promoting Sustainable Fisheries Management and Empowering Communities through Community Fish Landing Centers in the Philippines
- Promoting Responsible Fisheries in the High Seas: compliance of Thailand with regional fisheries management organizations
- Electronic Catch Documentation and Traceability System in Viet Nam: a new step forward in fisheries management
First implemented in 2007, the objectives of the RFPN program are to enhance policy dialogue and foster regional and sub-regional cooperation in fisheries policy among the ASEAN Member States, and at the same time build the capacity of the RFPN Members by involving them in relevant SEAFDEC activities.
