The Senior Information Officer from the SEAFDEC Secretariat, Ms. Saivason Klinsukhon, and the Information and Technology Officer from the SEAFDEC Training Department (TD), Ms. Namfon Imsamran, attended the Regional Technical Consultation on Current Status of Regional Fisheries Information/Mechanisms in the Asian Region. The Consultation was organized by SEAFDEC Marine Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (MFRDMD) on 28–30 May 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with the attendance of representatives from the ASEAN Member States (AMSs) except Lao PDR, Philippines, and Singapore, resource persons from the Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, senior officials from MFRDMD, and representatives from the SEAFDEC Secretariat and TD.
During the Consultation, the results of the analysis of the regional fishing capacity profile questionnaire were presented, which covered three chapters, namely: (i) national fishing capacity profile, (ii) implementation status of RPOA-Fishing Capacity, and (iii) implementation status of ASEAN Guidelines on IUU Fishing. Additionally, the AMSs also presented the current status of their respective regional fisheries information/mechanisms, and discussed the challenges in data collection, including difficulties in collecting data on inland capture fisheries, issues related to the supply chain process, and sharing of data and information with the public. In this regard, Ms. Saivason shared the views based on the results of the RTC on Fishery Statistics and Information held in the previous years, highlighting the availability of fishery statistics from the AMSs and common challenges in data collection, especially for inland capture fisheries.
The Consultation was conducted as one of the activities of the project “Implementation and Assessment of the ASEAN Regional Plan of Action for the Management of Fishing Capacity” supported by the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).
