SEAFDEC Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Fisheries Development at 34th ASWGFi

The SEAFDEC Secretary-General, Ms. Sampan Panjarat, accompanied by the Policy and Program Coordinator of the SEAFDEC Secretariat, Ms. Pattaratjit Kaewnuratchadasorn, participated in the 34th Meeting of the ASEAN Sectoral Working Group on Fisheries (34th ASWGFi) on 18 September 2026 in the Philippines. The meeting was hosted by the Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) of the Philippines.

At the 34th ASWGFi, SEAFDEC reported, under the ASEAN–SEAFDEC Strategic Partnership (ASSP), the outcomes of the 28th FCG/ASSP Meeting held in November 2025 in Langkawi, Malaysia. The report highlighted 18 ongoing projects implemented during 2025–2026. Furthermore, the 34th ASWGFi supported the submission of the Mid-term Review (2025) Report of the RES&POA-2030 for endorsement by SOM-AMAF and the relevant ASEAN higher-level bodies. The document was approved by the SEAFDEC Council during its 58th Meeting in May 2026. The ASEAN Member States (AMSs) expressed their appreciation for the ASEAN–SEAFDEC partnership and its continued support in key areas, particularly marine resource management, combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, addressing climate change, aquatic animal disease management, fisheries traceability, and regional food security.

As part of a side activity during the Meeting, SEAFDEC also joined the milkfish seed release at Puerto Princesa Port, contributing to local efforts to enhance fisheries resources.

Through its participation in ASEAN fisheries-related meetings, SEAFDEC continues to strengthen regional cooperation and reaffirm its commitment to advancing sustainable fisheries and aquaculture development in Southeast Asia
