FAO and SEAFDEC jointly organized the five-day “Regional Workshop on Key Challenges and Practical Solutions for Multispecies/Multigear (MSMG) Fisheries Management” on 8–12 June 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.
At the opening of the Workshop, Dr. Alue Dohong, Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative of the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, followed by Ms. Sampan Panjarat, Secretary-General of SEAFDEC, delivered the Welcome and Opening Remarks.
The Workshop brought together fisheries managers, scientists, and researchers from Southeast Asian and South Asian countries to examine the challenges and potential solutions for assessing and managing multispecies/multigear (MSMG) fisheries. The Workshop also aimed to identify and discuss key technical limitations inherent in tropical, small-scale, and mixed-stock fisheries, while introducing practical tools and approaches, including the MMSY-based framework and assessment toolbox, to support evidence-based fisheries management.
By the end of the Workshop, participants were expected to enhance their understanding of the trade-offs among multispecies yields, ecosystem sustainability, and socio-economic objectives. Furthermore, the Workshop aimed to strengthen participants’ capacity to assess and manage MSMG fisheries using pragmatic and ecosystem-based approaches, thereby contributing toward sustainable fisheries management goals, including SDG 14.
This Workshop was part of the joint efforts between SEAFDEC and FAO under the Letter of Agreement on “Mixed Stock Fisheries in the Asia-Pacific: Identifying Key Technical Limitations and Providing Practical Solutions for Management”
