On 24 June 2015, H.E. Nina Hachigian, U.S. Ambassador to the ASEAN visited the SEAFDEC Training Department, and was met by the senior management officials of TD and the Secretariat. While noting that the roles and functions of SEAFDEC focus in providing technical support and policy recommendations for sustainable development of fisheries in the Southeast Asian region, H.E. Nina Hachigian expressed the willingness of the U.S. to support the sustainable utilization of fishery resources, particularly through the initiatives on combating IUU fishing, and enhancing the application of traceability system for fish and fishery products from the region.
Discussion was also made on the areas where assistance would be required to enhance the sustainability of fisheries in Southeast Asia, e.g. engagement of external expertise in areas where certain expertise are not available within SEAFDEC, enhancing high-level support and recognition on the importance of the fisheries sector through improved valuation of fishery resources, and development of non-conventional methodologies to support fisheries data collection that could contribute to improving long-term statistics of the countries. After the discussion, H.E. Nina Hachigian observed the activities and facilities of TD, starting from fishing gear and marine engineering workshops, and the M.V. SEAFDEC docked at the TD pier.
