On 4-6 September 2013 in Bangkok, Thailand, SEAFDEC supported the International Ocean Institute (IOI) in the conduct of the “Pacem in Maribus XXXIV International Forum on Sustainable Governance of the Ocean” to discuss issues and challenges in achieving sustainability of the oceans. The Forum addressed important and emerging global, regional and national issues on the impacts of climate change and ocean related hazards, water and flood management policy implications, protection, mitigation and adaptation; followed-up on the outcome of Rio+20, implementation of UNCLOS and related instruments in the Southeast Asian region; promoted an integrated ocean web-based geographical information system; conducted a leadership seminar on science of tsunami for today’s society and its input to society security and sustainability; and convened a youth dialogue “The Ocean We Want” to discuss the rights of the youth in sustainable development.
Representing SEAFDEC during the Forum were Dr. Chumnarn Pongsri, SEAFDEC Secretary-General and Dr. Magnus Torell, SEAFDEC Special Advisor. During the Opening Ceremony, Dr. Chumnarn delivered a Message outlining the issues on sustainable utilization of marine fishery resources, particularly the initiatives undertaken in the region in conjunction with the UNCLOS and relevant instruments and agreements that had been put into practice to ensure the sustainability of marine resources in the region. He also talked about the activities undertaken by SEAFDEC to support the Member Countries in promoting sustainable development of fisheries under the framework of the CCRF.
