SEAFDEC organized the Meeting of Drafting Committee on Regional Cooperation in Sustainable Fisheries Development Towards the ASEAN Economic Community: Combating IUU Fishing and Enhancing the Competitiveness of ASEAN Fish and Fishery Products on 3-4 March 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand. Attended by the Drafting Committee Members from ASEAN-SEAFDEC Member Countries, namely: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam, as well as senior officers from SEAFDEC Secretariat, Aquaculture Department (AQD), Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (IFRDMD), Marine Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (MFRDMD), and Training Department (TD), the Meeting was aimed at developing the draft Joint ASEAN-SEAFDEC Declaration on Regional Cooperation for Combating IUU Fishing and Enhancing the Competitiveness of ASEAN Fish and Fishery Products based on the results and recommendations of the Stakeholders’ Consultation which was organized 2 days earlier.
The representative from the Philippines, Atty. Analiza A. Vitug was unanimously elected as Chairperson of Drafting Committee Meeting. After the Meeting, the drafting Committee adopted the First Draft of Joint ASEAN-SEAFDEC Declaration on Regional Cooperation for Combatting IUU fishing and Enhancing the Competitiveness of ASEAN Fish and Fishery Products. The Meeting was informed that the First Draft of the “Joint Declaration” would be submitted to the SEAFDEC Council and subsequently to the ASEAN through the ASEAN Sectoral Working Group on Fisheries (ASWGFi) for consideration and endorsement. The Chairperson of the Drafting Committee Meeting was also requested by the Drafting Committee to present the First Draft Joint Declaration during the 48th Meeting of SEAFDEC Council Meeting in April at Nha Trang, Viet Nam. Once the Draft Joint declaration is considered and endorsed by the SEAFDEC Council and ASWGFi, it would be raised during the High-level Consultation on 3 August 2016 for adoption by the SOM-level officials of the ASEAN-SEAFDEC Member Countries.
