Enhancing sustainable management of the blue swimming crab fisheries in Cambodia

Meeting with Angkual Community Fisheries (CFi)

The project “Enhancement of Sustainable Management of the Blue Swimming Crab Fisheries” implemented by Training Department (TD) with funding support from the Japanese Trust Fund (JTF) conducted two visits to the project site in Kep Province, Cambodia to plan for pilot activities. The mission from TD visited Angkual fishing community during 28-30 June and 2-6 July 2017 with objectives of obtaining information on the current fisheries resources and identifying problems by meeting with the staff from the Headquarter of Fisheries Administration (FiA) and Kep Provincial Office, as well as the Community Fisheries (CFi) of Angkual Village.

The first visit came up with an overview of fisheries situation of Kep Province and project implementation system, while the second visit further identified problems and possible ways of enhancing blue swimming crab resources in Angkual village. The visits and discussions concluded with eight activities towards enhancing blue swimming crab resources in Angkual village, namely: 1) introduction of technical of hatching; 2) construction of hatchery facility; 3) establishment of gravid crab supply system; 4) implementation of the fisheries surveillance; 5) introduction of penalties for fishermen operating illegally in conservation area; 6) notifying fishers on fishery regulation of conservation area and prevention of catch; 7) introduction of penalties for fishers landing small crabs; and 8) establishment of micro credit fund.
