Cooperation for the Management of Transboundary Species in the Northern Andaman Sea/Myeik Archipelago

The SEAFDEC-Sweden Project convened the “Technical Experts Meeting on Management of Transboundary Species for Northern Andaman Sea” on 13-14 March 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand attended by technical focal persons from Myanmar and Thailand and relevant officers of SEAFDEC.

The Technical Experts Meeting was held to follow-up the recommendations in relation to transboundary resources management that was previously discussed during the “3rd Sub-regional Consultative Workshop of the Northern Andaman Sea/Myeik Archipelago” held in November 2017. During the 3rd Sub-regional Consultative Workshop, it was suggested that transboundary species, i.e. anchovies, mackerels, and neritic tunas, should be targeted for management. It is also necessary to know the migration patterns of these species across the borders in order to portray their transboundary nature, as well as a need for cooperation between Myanmar and Thailand to protect their spawning areas and important habitats.

At this Technical Experts Meeting, further discussion was made on the types of information required for the development of thematic maps to indicate the species’ migration and spawning areas. It was also recommended that, once available, such thematic maps should be presented to a high-level meeting for consideration and to gather recommendations on appropriate process for development of coordinated management plans for the species.
