SEAFDEC activities, since its establishment in 1967, cover a wide range of fisheries disciplines. During the early years, activities were aimed at developing fishery potentials in the region in order to improve food supply, i.e. through development of marine fishing technology and culture of aquatic organisms. However, with the decline of fishery resources all over the world, including the Southeast Asian region, the activities of SEAFDEC have been broadened to ensure sustainable and responsible utilization of resources, and maximize utilization of the catch. SEAFDEC also supports the establishment of appropriate management approaches, applicable for small-scale, tropical specificity, to ensure sustainable utilization of fishery resources in the region. For over four decades, SEAFDEC has been recognized by the Member Countries as an organization that promotes sustainable fisheries development in the region on various aspects. Throughout the years, SEAFDEC programs of activities have been initiated and implemented taking into consideration the interdisciplinary approach to deliver its utmost benefit to the Member Countries.
