Philippines Conducts Workshop for the Conservation and Management of Sharks |

The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) of the Philippines organized a National Action Planning Workshop for the Conservation and Management of Sharks, from 14 to 16 November 2007 in Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines with partial support from the Japanese Trust Fund through the SEAFDEC program on Environmental Related Task in Southeast Asia. Ms. Rujarek Bumrasarinpai, Program Administration Officer represented SEAFDEC in the Workshop which was attended by other national and regional staff of the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), NFRDI, and partner institutions such as the USAID-BFAR FISH Project, Global Marine Species Assessment-Philippines, First Philippines Conservation Incorporated, Conservation International-Philippines, World Wildlife Fund (WWF-Philippines).

Fisheries Refugia Training-Workshop |

SEAFDEC/TD and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) jointly organized the Regional Training-Workshop on the Establishment and Management of Fisheries Refugia from 29 October to 10 November 2007 with 25 participants from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippine, Thailand and Vietnam.
The Regional Training-Workshop was aimed at building regional capacity for the future development of the regional system of fisheries refugia in the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. |

Regional Workshop in Seafood Safety for Laboratory Personnel |

MFRD conducted the Regional Workshop in Seafood Safety for Laboratory Personnel from 2 to 5 October 2007 under the project on Research and Analysis of Chemical Residues and Contamination in Fish and Fish Products supported by the Japanese Trust Fund.
There were 8 participants from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. A Senior NAFIQVED officer from Vietnam was the trainer for this course together with the support of MFRD officers. Lectures on contamination problems of chemotherapeutic drugs as well as practical sessions on the analysis of chloramphenicol, nitrofuran and malachite green using the LC-MS-MS were included in the workshop. In addition, the participants were also introduced to the principles of LC-MS-MS together with hands-on practice on the software. The feedback on the workshop was positive and the participants commented that what they had learnt was beneficial to their work. |

TD Conducts the International Training Course on Coastal |

SEAFDEC TD launched on 11 September 2007 the 1-month Coastal Fisheries Management and Extension Methodology Training Course with 17 participants from member and nonmember countries. The course focuses on modern principles and concepts of coastal fisheries and resources management; the need to change fisheries management towards comanagement in local communities; application of eco-system principles into fisheries management; small-scale fishery problems and constraints; facilitation, mediation and conflict resolution skills; and extension concepts, methodologies and implementation. Study/field trips to fishing villages and media centers have been arranged while the participants’ practical involvement and presentation of extension media have also been scheduled.

AQD Conducts Training on Abalone |

Eighteen trainees completed the International training course on abalone hatchery and grow-out conducted by AQD in Iloilo, Philippines from 6 to 25 September 2007. They came from Indonesia (1), Myanmar (1), Malaysia (2), and the Philippines (14). Most are fisheries officers of their respective country. The training focused on the tropical abalone, Haliotis asinina, which is a highly priced commodity. The topics included broodstock management, egg collection / incubation, veliger collection and stocking in settlement tank; identification of different abalone stages; identification and culture of benthic diatoms; larval rearing; and cage growout techniques. |
